Finding Available Shelters

The Shelter Map

When you visit Shelter Oakland, you'll see an interactive map centered on Oakland showing all shelter locations.

Note: You don't need to log in to browse the map - anyone can view shelter locations and availability. You only need to log in when you're ready to apply.

What You'll See on the Map

Each shelter appears as a marker on the map. The map automatically refreshes every 30 seconds to show current availability.

Red/Full

No beds currently available

"X / Y available"

X beds open out of Y total capacity

Important: Even if a shelter shows "Full", you can still apply. Beds become available as people leave, and your application will be in the queue.

If You're Already Staying at a Shelter

If you're currently registered at a shelter, you'll see a Shelter Status Card instead of the Apply button. This shows:

  • The shelter where you're currently staying

  • A "Not correct?" button if you need to report that you're no longer there

If your status is wrong, click "Not correct?" to report it. The shelter will be notified and will update your records.

Tips for Finding Shelter

  1. Apply to all matching shelters - When you apply, your application goes to ALL shelters that match your household size. This gives you the best chance.

  2. Check back regularly - Availability changes throughout the day as people check in and out.

  3. Call shelters directly - If you have specific questions about requirements, intake times, or what to bring.

  4. Complete your household setup first - You can't apply until your household information is complete.
