This guide is for individuals and families seeking shelter. Learn how to use Shelter Oakland to find available shelters, apply for placement, and check your application status.


How Shelter Oakland Works

  1. Search - View available shelters on an interactive map with real-time availability

  2. Create Account - Sign up through our secure partner platform, Advocate

  3. Set Up Household - Complete a 3-step form about your household (required before applying)

  4. Apply - Submit one application per day (goes to all matching shelters)

  5. Wait - Shelter staff review applications and contact you when space is available

Important: You can only submit one application per day. This application is shared with all shelters that match your household's needs. We recommend to keep applying each day until you become sheltered, as multiple applications increase your chance of being served.
